Can I use a card everywhere on safari?
No. Acceptance varies between countries, providers and individual properties, and a card terminal can depend on a working connection. A business that accepts one card network may not accept another. Ask the actual camp or operator rather than treating a general country guide as confirmation for a specific payment.
List the expenses still due during the trip, including accommodation balances, drinks, optional activities, laundry and transfers. Record the accepted method for each. Check transaction limits and any disclosed card surcharge before paying. Keep a backup method separate from your main card. If a payment fails, contact the provider through a known channel instead of responding to an unexpected message with new payment instructions.
Which currency belongs in my spending plan?
Use the destination's local currency as the starting point for ordinary local purchases, then confirm any supplier request for another currency. Visit Rwanda identifies the Rwandan franc as its principal currency while noting that some tourism payments also use other currencies. Botswana uses the pula. Neither example creates a rule for every safari country.
Ask how a bill quoted in one currency is settled in another and which exchange basis applies. Do not assume a foreign-currency price makes every note or denomination acceptable. For a route crossing borders, keep separate country envelopes or an expense list so you do not confuse balances. Your bank and the payment provider explain their own fees and conversion options.
How much cash do I carry?
Start with a list of cash-only expenses you actually expect, then add a modest contingency appropriate to your arrangements. There is no defensible universal amount per traveler that fits every safari. A fully prepaid lodge itinerary and a self-arranged route with local stops create different spending needs.
Keep funds secure and divide access sensibly rather than displaying a large wallet when making small purchases. Obtain smaller denominations before reaching a remote base if tips or incidental spending require them. Record what is prepaid so that you do not carry the same amount twice. Avoid discussing exact cash holdings publicly or sharing card details in an operator's general email thread.
Are ATMs available near safari camps?
Some gateways and larger towns have ATMs; many remote wildlife bases do not. Botswana Tourism notes that foreign-card cash facilities are concentrated in larger towns and cities. That is a reason to confirm a withdrawal opportunity on your actual transfer route, not a reason to assume every scheduled stop has working access.
Make a plan before departure that accounts for card limits, local holidays and the order of travel. Never depend on a single machine as the only way to settle a required balance. Ask whether an operator schedules a suitable town stop without compromising gate times or flights. Keep receipts and review bank notifications privately if a transaction seems inconsistent with the agreed amount.
How do I keep payments clear with an operator?
Use a written payment schedule showing amounts, currencies, due dates and the recipient's legal or trading name. Confirm instructions through previously verified contact details, particularly when a message announces a changed bank account. A polished invoice alone does not establish the identity of its sender.
Keep a separate record of package payments and discretionary spending. This helps explain whether an unexpected request is an exclusion, a duplicate charge or an optional purchase. Ask questions before authorizing a payment, and retain confirmations for the trip. Request Safari's V1 planning content does not collect safari payments or verify an individual supplier's bank details; agreements and payments remain matters for the traveler and provider.
