Start with the trip’s beginning and end
Ask where the paid itinerary begins and finishes. An airport pickup, a city hotel departure and a lodge check-in are three different starting points. The same applies at the end: a return to town may leave you needing another transfer or an additional hotel night before your flight. Put both endpoints on your comparison sheet.
Then check the first and last included services. Does the package begin with breakfast, lunch or dinner? Is a late arrival meal arranged? If your flight lands before the room is available, where do you wait? Small gaps around the edges of a trip can affect both comfort and your final budget.
Translate accommodation language into facilities
Get the property and room category in writing, together with the number of nights and the sleeping arrangement. Ask about private bathrooms, beds, charging facilities, cooling options and any other feature that matters to you. Photographs of a property's best room may not represent the category included in your proposal, so request the relevant room description.
Accommodation names also say little about catering. SANParks describes Kruger bush camps without shops or restaurants and bush lodges that must be reserved as a whole. This illustrates why the facilities and meal arrangement need checking separately from the property's general label. For your specific stay, confirm who provides meals and where you eat.
Separate meals, drinks and incidentals
List each day's meals rather than relying solely on a board abbreviation. Travel-day lunches, picnic meals and meals before a late flight are worth clarifying. Ask which drinks are included with meals and which are charged separately. If you need a particular dietary arrangement, obtain confirmation that it can be provided at every overnight stop.
Treat laundry, personal purchases, gratuities and premium drinks as separate questions. An operator may include some and exclude others. You do not need a prediction of every purchase, but you do need a realistic allowance for spending outside the package. Ask how incidental charges are recorded and settled at each property so there are fewer surprises.
Identify the transport you are buying
A transport inclusion should specify the journey, vehicle arrangement and whether it is shared. Confirm airport names and transfer endpoints rather than simply accepting airport transfer as a description. Where flights are involved, ask whether the quoted fare includes the baggage you intend to carry and the transfers between the airstrip and accommodation.
For road safaris, distinguish the vehicle used between destinations from the one used for wildlife drives. Ask about seating, window access and whether your party has exclusive use. If you are quoted a private vehicle, establish whether that applies throughout the itinerary or only on selected days. Different answers can justify a meaningful price difference.
Check activities and access charges
Create a separate line for each included activity, with its expected duration and any participation conditions. Ask whether a boat outing, guided walk or special evening activity is scheduled, subject to availability or merely suggested. Optional activities should have a clear booking process, and the operator should explain what happens to the day's normal activity if you choose one.
Ask which park, reserve or conservation access charges are included and which remain payable separately. Request the assumptions used for your party without relying on a general online fee table. If costs can change before travel, ask how the operator communicates revisions. A clear proposal distinguishes confirmed services from amounts that remain estimates.
Build a complete holiday budget
Add the package total to your separately arranged transport, extra hotel nights and an allowance for uncovered meals and personal spending. Keep optional activities in their own column so you can decide which ones matter. This gives you a working holiday budget rather than a headline price that ignores the practical cost of completing the journey.
Before paying, ask for a final inclusions-and-exclusions summary attached to the itinerary. Check that verbal promises and email amendments appear in it. When something remains unclear, request a specific answer: Is the arrival transfer included for our flight, at that airport, on that date? Precise questions are more useful than asking whether everything is included.
