Choose an anchor experience
Name the experience you would most regret missing, then build the journey around it. That might be time in the Mara landscape, elephant watching in Amboseli or a safari linked to a coastal holiday. Kenya Wildlife Service describes Amboseli as a mix of plains, woodlands and wetlands beneath Kilimanjaro. That gives you a useful picture of its setting, without implying a mountain view or animal encounter is guaranteed.
Keep a second priority and a short optional list. This helps an operator make sensible tradeoffs when accommodation or transport availability changes. If every destination is described as essential, the likely result is a rushed itinerary. Ask what would improve if you removed one stop and spent the saved night somewhere already on the route.
Count days you can actually use
Separate international travel days, transfer days and full days at a safari base. A six-night holiday with four accommodation changes gives a different experience from six nights split between two places. Ask for the expected departure and arrival windows for each move, including stops, airport handling and the final journey from gate or airstrip to camp.
Treat a road transfer with possible sightings as a transfer first. It may be enjoyable, but it should not be presented as equivalent to a dedicated drive with no arrival deadline. Compare a road-based proposal with a flying alternative only after both show their complete door-to-door arrangements, baggage conditions and any overnight connection.
Read accommodation location carefully
A property name and room photograph cannot tell you how the safari day works. Request a map pin and ask which wildlife areas are reached from that base. Clarify whether the property is inside a protected area, outside a gate or in a neighboring conservancy, and which entry permissions the quote includes.
Also check the practical comforts that matter to you: bathroom arrangements, charging access, meal times, walking distances between rooms and dining areas, and help with luggage. Describe mobility or dietary requirements before choosing a property. An attractive upgrade is useful only if it makes the actual journey better for your party.
Compare like with like
Give each operator the same dates, traveler ages, room configuration and budget definition. Ask whether the vehicle is private throughout or whether some drives are shared. Compare included park access, transfers, meals and activities in separate lines. Request the total for your actual group rather than relying on a headline price based on a different occupancy.
Before committing, obtain the cancellation terms, payment schedule and process for agreed substitutions. Ask who meets you and whom to contact if a flight changes. Keep a realistic wildlife wish list and leave space for ordinary moments: birds around camp, changes in landscape and an unhurried conversation with your guide. A coherent route makes those parts of the holiday possible.
